Surrey batted first reaching 118, Sussex then posted a first innings lead with 163. Surrey then scored 362 (K.J. Key 99). Anxious to get Sussex in again to bat on a worsening wicket, last man Ted Bowley ran down the wicket trying to get himself stumped but wicket-keeper Dudney refused to dismiss him. Sussex survived the remaining 90 minutes of play, ending 61
